- W4366960950 abstract "In Athens, private wealth was harnessed on a large scale in the religious and military spheres in the form of liturgies and eisphorai. This specific way of having common tasks financed by wealthy citizens had far-reaching social consequences: On the one hand, the group of people liable to pay taxes was successively reduced and the political community became dependent on the economic elite. On the other hand, the system of liturgies was based on a reciprocal relationship between the wealthy citizen and the polis: the citizen’s material performance demanded the community’s gratitude as proof of his orientation towards the common good. Liturgies therefore signalled economic resources and manifested social status; they also suggested generosity, selflessness, reliability and a sense of duty – qualities that could be interpreted as leadership qualities." @default.
