- W4367152496 abstract "Abdominal pain due to non-surgical causes is common. This is especially true in children because localization of symptoms is vague and violent reactions may occur with but slight cause. This has been explained as being due to an increased or unstable metabolism incident to normal growth. Whatever the cause, the establishment of a diagnosis of acute surgical abdomen, difficult enough in an adult, is infinitely more so in a child. Too often the diagnostic position is taken that pain in the abdomen means that the child has appendicitis or else that he has eaten injudiciously. The commonest cause of the acute surgical abdomen, acute appendicitis, is the most important condition to rule out in deciding the disease is nonsurgical and the differential diagnosis will largely be made with this in mind." @default.
