- W4367173890 abstract "Welcome to the third issue of Nursing in Critical Care for 2023. In this issue, we cast a light on simulation in critical care training, tool assessment and development and several miscellaneous topic that are important to critical care nursing. We are pleased to open this issue with a guest editorial1 by Amanda Miller, head of simulation and clinical skills at Edge Hill University, which provides insight on the use of simulation and accompanying debriefing as an educational tool for nurses. This sets the scene for the research studies on simulation presented in this issue. Hassan and Elsaman2 conducted a parallel-design randomized controlled trial assessing the effectiveness on simulation-based flipped classroom on cardiopulmonary resuscitation skill attainment, whereas Alsaedi et al.3 used simulation-based assessment of the resuscitation care provided to neonates in cardiogenic shock by emergency nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists and allied professionals. Another paper focused on training is Kes et al's.4 pre-and post-test study on the effectiveness of short test messages on intensive care nurses' arrhythmia interpretation skills. The other guest editorial5 for this issue focuses on environmental sustainability in critical care. This expands on the call for papers we released earlier this year for an upcoming special issue on this topic, guest edited by Heather Baid from the University of Brighton (UK) and Fredrika Sundberg from Skaraborg Hospital (Sweden). We encourage our readers to consider submitting papers for this issue and/or to alert colleagues who may be interested to do so. This issue also includes a set of methodological papers focusing on the development and and/or evaluation of instruments that support critical care practice or research. Chen et al.6 assessed the predictive validity of the Jackson–Cubbin scale for pressure ulcers through a systematic review and meta-analysis, do Nascimento et al.7 validated care guidelines for critically ill patients on continuous renal replacement therapy, whereas Luo et al.8 examined the performance of the second version of the National Early Warning score (NEWS2) in identifying the risk of serious deterioration among patients newly admitted with COVID-19. Tume and colleagues9 evaluated the use of the Template for Intervention Description and Replication (TIDieR) checklist in reporting their complex intervention in the Sedation and Weaning in Children [SANDWICH] trial,10 whereas Mahran et al.11 developed and validated a tool for the daily nursing assessment of critically ill patients. Other papers in this issue analyse nurses' knowledge and practices related to oral care12 and central line-associated bloodstream infections13; the demand on and efficacy of critical care outreach service during the COVID-19 pandemic14; and the development and implementation of a family-centred transition intervention programme led by an intensive care unit liaison nurse.15 The issue concludes with two paediatric and neonatal care papers: a case study of the postoperative care provided to an infant who underwent pulmonary artery tracheal transposition with slide tracheobronchial keratoplasty16 and a systematic review with meta-analysis on the effects of the mother's voice on painful procedures among pre-term and full-term infants.17 We trust that you will enjoy reading these papers and that they will make you reflect on your own practice as a clinician, educator or researcher.
