- W4367461053 abstract "Behavioral momentum theory (BMT) is a complex conceptual system that integrates empirically derived functional relations among variables into a single explanation of how reinforcement can strengthen a response and how response strength affects current and future responding. In this chapter, we briefly review the traditional view of response probability as the primary measure of response strength and issues with this view. Next, we introduce the notion that a response’s resistance to change is a better measure of response strength, which is a core assumption of BMT, and briefly review typical methods for measuring response strength. We then evaluate the implications of this view and describe how it has been applied to clinical issues, such as noncompliance and resistance to change. We next review the principles that are the basis for the formalization of BMT as a quantitative model and review the empirical findings supporting BMT. We then explain how this formalization allowed researchers to extend the principles of BMT to address the critical issue of treatment relapse. Finally, we note the limitations of BMT and offer future directions to resolve its shortcomings." @default.
