- W4372218592 abstract "Membrane degradation is an irreversible loss of integrity of the membrane. Membrane degradation can be caused by chemical attack and/or mechanical means, both of which are exacerbated by sub-optimal operating and pretreatment conditions. Chemical and mechanical damage is irreversible. Chemicals attack at least one of the three membrane layers: polyamide, polysulfone, or the polyester fabric backing. Chemical damage to polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membranes essentially involves dissolution of one or more of the three membrane components, the polyamide surface layer, the polysulfone support layer, and/or the polyester fabric backing. Physical and operational issues can cause mechanical damage to RO membranes. Mechanical damage can impact the RO membrane directly or affect the membrane element that eventually leads to membrane damage. Once the membrane is damaged, high water and solute throughput occurs; this damage is irreversible." @default.
