- W43751106 abstract "The Ol'khovaya Reservoir is situated in Donetsk Oblast on the Ol'khovaya River, 1.5 km above its outlet into the Krynka River, a tributary of the Mius. It became operative in 1932. The river and, therefore, the reservoir receive the effluents of 42 mines located in their drainage area. With respect to chemical composition, the mine effluent is high in salts, specifically sodium chlorides and sulfates. These compounds tended to increase from 1962 to 1972; in particular, the total ions increased 25.8 percent. Suspended and organic matter decreased 65.7 and 30.4 percent respectively. In some mines, the water pH was 2.48, but their flow constituted no more than 0.5 percent of the total flow into the reservoir. The salinity of the river during the same period increased 21 percent while total salts amounted to 1.85 g/liter. The sodium chlorides increased perceptibly in the river water, i.e., the same changes took place as in the mine effluent. The erosion of organic matter by surface runoff accounts for the slight increase in permanganate oxidizability in river water compared to mine water: the mean annual quantity in 1972 was 4.6 mg of O/sub 2//liter. Suggested measures for improving the quality of Ol'khovaya Reservoir water:more » purification of mine effluents in settling ponds or local mine installations; cleaning up the beds of the tributaries; organization of water-protection strips and zones; erosion control; introduction of fresh water from the Sev. Donets-Donbass Canal.« less" @default.
