The purpose of this study is to examine the role of King Hunan in founding Gajisanmoon School, one of the nine Zen Buddhism schools in the late Silla Dynasty. It is generally known that Gajisanmoon School was founded by Doui who first introduced Zen Buddhism to the Silla Dynasty, and Chejing who succeeded Yeomgu, who was Doui’s disciple. As such, previous studies focused on clarifying how Chejing found Gajisanmoon school under the auspices of the royal family and central aristocrats. According to the records, such as the Stele of Zen Master Bojo and the inscription of Iron Vairocana Buddha Statue currently kept in Borimsa temple, that show the situation of that time, Gajisansa, the core temple, already had a close relationship with the royal family in the middle of the Silla Dynasty when it was first founded. In Chejing’s founding of Gajisanmoon School, King Hunan actually led the rebuilding of Gajisansa temple. Even Chejing’s move to Gajisansa temple was at the request of King Hunan. King Hunan’s rebuilding of Gajisansa temple stemmed from his intention to appease the people of Muju, who became dissatisfied with the royal family of Silla Dynasty because of Chang Bogo’s rebellion(841). In those days, Chejing, who worked hard to edify the people of Woong-ju who were hostile to the royal family of Silla due to Kim hun-chang’s rebellion(822), moved to Hwanghaknanya in Muju. The reason King Hunan brought Chejing to Gajisansa temple was to edify the people of Muju through Chejing. King Hunan rebuilt Gajisansa temple and entrusted its management to Chejing because he desperately needed to improve the relations with the people of Muju. In Muju, a great conflict arose between the maritime forces of the Southwest Coast and the indigenous forces of the inland in the aftermath of Chang Bogo’s rebellion. What is worse, both the maritime forces and the indigenous forces were experiencing internal conflicts due to their own interests. Furthermore, conflicts occurred because of the mutual interests in Muju between central political forces. For this reason, King Hunan needed to resolve these issues on Muju." @default.
