- W4376256154 abstract "This chapter explores the ways EXtended Reality (XR) can be subverted during spacemaking processes. It considers the broader processes of spacemaking that take place across XR’s ‘virtuality continuum’ and develops the idea of disruptive spacemaking as a way of thinking about the kinds of resistances to power and authority that are possible within XR spaces. Following geographical theories, space is conceived as being actively produced by its users and imbued with meaning. Thus, countering how spatial mechanics underlying digital environments have been consciously designed and demonstrating how ‘background’ space can ever be considered a neutral container of meaningful place. To explore this disruptive potential, I present a case study based on an analysis of digital content developed by UK environmental charities and demonstrate how three key theoretical approaches - deterritorialization, heterotopia and utopia - can be employed to examine this XR content to understand its potential for creating disruptive spaces." @default.
