- W4376553219 abstract "The use of the glial system discussed in this chapter led to the identification of a protein factor—endogenous to the adult brain—that is capable of promoting reversibly the morphological and chemical differentiation of glioblasts. The factor is operationally designated the glia maturation factor (GMF). This chapter aims to update the present knowledge of this factor, with emphasis on its cellular effects and chemical nature. Speculations on the biological implications are extrapolated from presently available data. The first chemical change in response to GMF consists of an increase in intracellular cyclic GMP, which reaches as high as five times the control level and occurs as early as 1 hour after stimulation. The next detectable chemical event consists of an increase in thymidine incorporation into DNA, which is best observed between hours 12 and the 24. Distribution of GMF has been discussed in the chapter. GMF is not species-specific. Brain extracts from rats, pigs, cattle, sheep, monkeys, and humans are equally active on rat glioblasts. GMF-like activity is demonstrable in other rat organs, such as kidney and heart. The chapter also highlights possible biological role of GMF and general implications in cell biology." @default.
