- W4376870702 abstract "It is unclear exactly who gets credit for this quote, but it has been used to describe warfare, flying, poker, playing outfield in baseball, anesthesiology, and…team coverage. This phrase came to mind when I was covering a gymnastics event at a local university several years ago. Our program was devoid of both scholarships and talent, and we were competing against some of the better teams in our region. Needless to say, I was nervous every time one of our gymnasts ran down the ramp to the pommel horse, and there were plenty of “miss-mounts.” The one thing that can reduce the risk of sheer terror in this arena is something we can borrow from the Boy Scout Motto: Be Prepared! The timing of this issue of Clinics in Sports Medicine couldn’t have been better. But, I must admit that it was sheer luck that we planned this issue well before the Damar Hamlin incident brought this topic into the national spotlight. Fortunately, the medical teams covering that infamous Bills versus Bengals NFL game were prepared and literally saved this young man’s life. It is essential that EMTs, Athletic Trainers, Team Physicians, and anyone covering athletics be ready for any catastrophic event that may occur in an otherwise mundane, or even boring, competition. This requires vigilance to stay current on diagnosis and treatment of on-field emergencies, maintaining credentials, and practice. We can help with the first requirement—just read this treatise! Thank you to the tremendous medical team at the University of Colorado—Home of Coach Prime Time. Drs McCarty, Poddar, and Ebinger put together a fantastic issue that covers everything from sudden collapse to traumatic injuries. These three team physicians come from different specialties and bring amazing insight to those of us that cover sports. As a member of the Presidential line of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), I would be remiss if I didn’t put in a plug for what our society has planned to help you manage on-the-field emergencies. Look for a new Phone App and a new Master’s Team Physician course to be announced soon. Because, as our motto notes—“We keep you in the game” (and help you prepare for moments of sheer terror)." @default.
