- W4377021911 abstract "Abstract Redirecting government policy from economic growth to improving wellbeing may result in less real change than is often hoped. In the absence of very fundamental social change, the drivers of economic growth are likely to remain intact. Although the development of new measures of wellbeing may sharpen our focus on the quality of life, progress will depend on overcoming the powerful political forces which prevent reductions in things already known to reduce wellbeing, such as poverty, homelessness, unemployment, and food insecurity. The power of economic growth and the political weakness of the demand to increase wellbeing has resulted in the paradoxical coexistence of unprecedented levels of material comfort and gadgetry surrounded by extraordinarily high levels of stress, anxiety, mental illness, and social dysfunction. In this situation, the authors of this chapter argue that major reductions in inequality are essential both to improve psychosocial wellbeing and to facilitate the transition to sustainability." @default.
