- W4377081946 abstract "Invar alloys are a special class of alloys showing little or no expansivity with temperature in the normal working range. The term “Invar” originated from a study of Guillaume (Comp Rend Acad Sci Ser 125:235, 1897) on opposite-centered cubic FeNi alloys in the early nineteenth century. He discovered that the thermal expansion of such alloys as a function of temperature was anomalous; that is to say, the length of a sample remained constant, corresponding to a thermal expansion coefficient of zero or near-zero, over a wide temperature range. This discovery was of very high practical importance, since this alloy could be applied in precision instruments, integrated circuit matrices, and seismograph components. Furthermore, Guillaume found that the thermal expansion of FeNiCr alloy was temperature-independent over a wide range, allowing this alloy to be used as a pendulum material. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1920 for this research." @default.
