- W4377824215 abstract "As the most commonly used large-scale wastewater treatment facility to decompose organic substances and pollutants, anaerobic digestion (AD) has been used recently to treat microconstituents (MCs). However, sufficient information is not available on in-depth analyses of MCs removal in AD processes. This chapter presents a non-exhaustive yet synthesized overview of recent advances in using AD processes for MC treatment. Results of a literature search indicate that AD (or its combination with other processes) can remove many MCs very efficiently. The use of sludge pretreatment methods does not seem to enhance MCs removal, whereas encouraging results have been reported when AD was combined with other treatment methods. The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor may be crucial in the removal of many MCs, but not all MCs. Anaerobic membrane reactors (AnMBRs) represent a potential method for effective treatment of MCs in industrial and municipal wastewater. Hydraulic/solids retention times (HRTs/SRTs), organic volumetric loading rate, temperature, and pH are the most important operational parameters affecting AD performance. Sludge characteristics (type of sludge, adaptation on the compound), physico-chemical properties of MCs, and metabolism also affect MCs biodegradation. AD has demonstrated its potential as a technology for MCs removal, but considerable research still is needed to further expand the application of ADs in this area." @default.
