- W4377972072 abstract "The gnawing behavior was studied in a 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. The test was conducted under experimental conditions in which animals were housed for 7 days in individual cages that also contained environmental enrichment elements - peat pots - toward which the animals exhibited a fairly wide repertoire of behavioral events, ranging from using them as shelters or demonstrating ignorance - to gnawing, which is a behavior specific to small mouse-like rodents. This phenomenon is related to many aspects of behavioral adaptability, including cognitive efficiency and goal-directed behavior. To measure the intensity of gnawing, daily photometry of a gnawed object was performed in a specialized setup including a camera with a fisheye lens. It was found that 5xFAD homozygous animals had statistically significantly (p = 0.032) lower levels of gnawing compared to wild-type animals, even though the test was performed on four-month-old animals. The obtained results demonstrate a significant potential of gnawing behavior assessment for quantitative characterization of cognitive impairment in animals with model neurodegenerative diseases, including at an early age." @default.
