- W43782574 abstract "This Research Report analyses a Fertilizer Distribution System within Australia which is undergoing change. The Australian Fertilizer industry in general, and Incitec Ltd in particular, are changing from a local-manufacturing base to an increasing proportion of trading in imported finished goods. This Report identifies problems and highlights opportunities for the use of information systems to improve the management of the total, Integrated Logistics System. This Report takes the format exploratory research. It firstly undertakes a review of recent Physical Distribution Management literature. It then analyses Incitec Ltd's current fertilizer Distribution performance and future opportunities. The Report specifically focuses on the application of information technology and management information systems to these identified opportunities. The report finds that :- The Physical Distribution of Fertilizers is strategically significant to Incitec Ltd. Until recently, Incitec Ltd has been organized along traditional, functional lines. There has been a Supply-oriented approach to materials management with some coordinated planning of manufacturing and supply. Until now there has been little integration with the management of the distribution channel from finished goods to the Consumers. The conversion to an importing and wholesaling strategy is providing the opportunity for the Fertilizer Distribution channel to become more flexible and responsive to changes in market demand. To achieve a balance between physical distribution and customer service, the physical distribution channel needs to be managed in total, as an integrated Logistics System. Incitec Ltd has recently introduced a number of changes which are all consistent with the adoption of an Integrated Logistics Management philosophy. These initiatives have been in the areas of -: ( a) organizational re-structure towards integrated businesses, (b) a customer service oriented Service Quality program, (c) integration of the Supply, Manufacturing and Distribution planning functions into the one department within the combined Fertilizer and Industrial Chemicals Division, and (d) the introduction of a Sales and Operations Planning system. A new transaction processing business system (MIDAS), with online sales order entry and a corporate database, has been in operation for two years. This is providing primary business data which is now available for use in improved management information systems. Further enhancements are suggested for MIDAS, to encompass the operational management of field warehouse inventories. There are a number of opportunities for implementation of new management information and decision support systems, which will assist with the better management of the Integrated Logistics System. This report identifies opportunities in the tactical areas of Sales Forecasting and Distribution Requirement Planning, and their integration with Master Production Scheduling, Manufacturing and Purchasing Planning and Import Shipping scheduling. The integration of all of these systems will provide a total Logistics Requirement Planning system, to be used for tactical material requirement decision making. This system should also be capable of running in simulation mode for strategic decision making on issues such as Physical Distribution channel design." @default.
