This article selects the version of Kiều in Quốc ngữ annotated by Le Van Hoe (1953), including 3254 verses.4 Ngâm Kiều is a melodic recitation of the verses in Kiều.5 Vịnh Kiều means using the materials of Kiều, such as scenes, characters, situations, and stories, to create other couplets.6 Bình Kiều means writing commentaries on Kiều.7 Lẩy Kiều means changing a word or phrase in couplets to adapt them for one’s purposes.8 Bói Kiều means telling someone’s fortune by randomly taking a line of verse, whose meaning then indicates his/her future.9 Traditional Vietnamese opera is a Chinese opera variation known as hát tuồng in northern Vietnam and hát bội in southern Vietnam.10 A form of generally satirical musical theatre performed by Vietnamese peasants in northern Vietnam.11 Usually, the last syllable of the six-syllable line rhymes with the sixth syllable of the eight-syllable in pairs.
