- W4378530892 abstract "This chapter will address aspects of the biomanufacturing and application of the Organ-on-a-chip (OoC) platform for studying viral diseases since they reproduce aspects of human physiology more faithfully, such as cell–cell interactions, mechanical, and microfluidic stimuli. Firstly, conventional pre-clinic drug toxicity and viral infection assays performed in 2D cells and animals will be presented against the OoC platform in the pandemic scenario caused by COVID-19. We will show the challenges of manufacturing and using this platform to study diseases with pathogenic microbiological agents requiring biosafety levels 2 and 3. In addition, this section will present different organ architectures and disease studies for drug discovery and vaccine development, emphasizing the main organs affected by SARS-CoV-2, such as the intestines, lungs, kidneys, and liver. Then, analytical techniques that can be hyphenated or not with biodevices will be shown to conduct studies of drugs and diseases in real-time (online) or offline. Also, this chapter will highlight the use of these analytical techniques to understand the viral infection process within the OoC platform, knowing that applications in virology for the OoC platform represent a new area to study drugs and vaccines. As with everything new, some detection methods applied in OoC will be exemplified in the following topics as inspiration for applied studies in virology." @default.
