- W4378605414 abstract "Children, Youth and Environments Vol. 20 No. 1 (Spring 2010) ISSN: 1546-2250 A Kid’s Look at Colorado Perry, Phyllis J. (2005). Golden, CO: Fulcrum Publishing; 204 pages. $15.95. ISBN 1555918565. A Kid’s Look at Colorado, written by Phyllis J. Perry, provides a comprehensive look at Colorado’s history, landmarks and state symbols, as well as current information about the state for students in grades 3-8. A former teacher in theBoulder Valley School District, the author incorporates her knowledge of both the state curriculum and Colorado history to paint a delightful mosaic of many of the diverse events, people, and places that have made Colorado the state it is today. Perry is an award-winning author of more than 40 books for children, parents, and educators and is an expert in Colorado history. Although this book is intended for children, it can also be used as a valuable resource for parents and educators to further their knowledge aboutColorado. The book is divided into 15 chapters, each dedicated to a different facet of Colorado history, its natural resources, and state symbols. The last chapter takes a look at present-dayColorado. Perry has designed the book so that it can be used either as a reference (including a table of contents and topic index) or simply an enjoyable read. Because of the wide range of topics covered, it is likely even native Coloradans will learn something by reading this book. For every topic presented in the book, Perry has collected interesting stories from across the state. She scatters these vignettes throughout the text with engaging photographs in order to provide a detailed and intimate look at some of the characters, battles and the native vegetation for whichColorado is known today. For example, Perry describes the unique and unlikely tale of Rocky Mountain Jim and Lady Isabella Bird who climbed Longs Peak together in 1873, the story of William Bent and the construction of Fort Lyon, and John Wesley Powell’s contribution in compiling a dictionary of Ute vocabulary. 349 Although Perry wrote A Kid’s Look at Colorado in kid-friendly language, she does not shortchange readers with a lack of details in the topics she presents. When describing the history of branding cattle, for example, Perry not only defines it and describes the traditions around this practice, but also provides a full-page display of typical brand designs, how to read them, and what they mean. At the end of each chapter Perry lists practical ideas for further exploration and learning extensions specifically designed for kids. These activities include map-making, website links, additional book titles, and song-writing. Perry’s talents as an educator as well as her extensive knowledge and passion for Colorado history neatly combine for an engaging read.
