- W4378605895 abstract "Current Bibliography in the History of Technology (1987) The following compilation is the twenty-sixth annual bibliography of current publications on the history of technology. The reader is referred to previous bibliographies pertaining to the history of technology (see Technology and Culture, Winter 1964, the Spring issues for 1965 and 1966, and the April issues, 1967 through 1988) and to the fifth publication of the SHOT monograph series, Eugene S. Ferguson’s Bibliography of the History of Technology (Cambridge, Mass.: SHOT and MIT Press, 1968). This year’s bibliography is the last that will be compiled under our primary direction, although we hope to be able to contribute in smaller ongoing ways in the future. We are pleased to have been able to extend the work begun so ably by Gene Ferguson and Jack Goodwin twenty-six years ago; we are equally pleased, however, to be able to turn over the editorship of the “Current Bibliography” to Dr. Henry Lowood of the Stanford University Libraries. We have been working closely with Henry to effect a smooth transition, and we wish him well, knowing the bibliography baton is being passed into extremely competent hands. During the past six years the bibliography has undergone a number of changes, including several classification and time period adjust ments and the production of annual rather than biennial indexes. And undoubtedly it will continue to undergo changes in the years ahead. However, the most important, although probably the least obvious, change to date has been the gradual move toward complete computerization of the project from initial data entry to final type setting. In six years, through a process of sometimes slow and hesitant steps, we have moved forward from a manuscript composed of duplicated 5x8 index cards to this year’s version, which from start to finish has utilized computerized bibliographic software. We and the Society for the History of Technology are indebted to two individuals for their extensive roles this year in finalizing the last but most© 1989 by the Society for the History of Technology. Our thanks thus go to Jane Morley for helping to select and test the appropriate commercial software and for introducing us to David Toliver of ISI, whom we thank for writing a specially tailored program to fit the particular formatting needs of the Technology and Culture “Current Bibliogra phy.” We would like to record our appreciation for the special contribution they have made. Another change that has occurred during the past two years has been the addition of several individuals to the bibliography masthead as new collaborators. As the bibliography has grown in size and complexity, it has become increasingly clear that no one person or even trio of people can readily handle the project on their own. Thus, we have welcomed the assistance of additional contributors who have volunteered to search selected sets ofjournals or subject fields. It is, then, with a sense of deep gratitude that we sincerely thank Victoria Dow, Jane Morley, Louis Rodriquez, and Ian Winship for their valuable scholarly contributions to the bibliography. We are grateful for the continued receipt of numerous complimen tary subscriptions tojournals, newsletters, and other publications. We would also like to thank all those SHOT members who have sent us books, offprints, and citations to their works and to those ofother schol ars that we might otherwise have missed. Together with Henry Lowood we encourage the members to continue to send such references to him at the Stanford University Libraries, Stanford, California 94305. Henry would also like to encourage individuals who might like to contribute to the bibliography on a more regular basis to contact him. As is so often the case, a number of largely unsung people have made crucial contributions to the success of this bibliography. We would like to thank Eunice Rankin of the Lehigh Libraries for her assistance in data entry and Mary Jo Carlen of Lehigh’s STS Program, not only for her help in final manuscript preparation this year, but also for her unstinting support from the beginning of our involve..." @default.
