- W4378625612 abstract "Photobiological hydrogen production involving the splitting of water using sunlight by photosynthetic microorganisms is carried out by the process of photolysis. The hydrogen ions generated by this splitting process can be combined in various ways and released as hydrogen gas. Due to the scarcity of fossil fuels, several unconventional energy sources are being explored in order to replace the traditional fossil fuel energy source. In this regard, hydrogen gas is an appealing alternative source. Microorganisms like green algae and cyanobacteria generate hydrogen during photosynthesis to eliminate surplus energy. If manipulated effectively, solar energy can be captured directly in the form of hydrogen gas. This chapter explores the different mechanisms by which photobiological hydrogen can be produced by microorganisms and what advantages it brings along to the economy as well as the environment. Although the photobiological production method is a relatively new and fascinating method of manufacturing hydrogen, it also has a set of drawbacks, which needs significant research before it can be recognized as a commercially viable primary energy source." @default.
