- W4378651856 abstract "The global incidence of obesity and its associated diseases has increased dramatically in recent decades in all population groups, including women of reproductive age. Obesity during pregnancy has an immediate detrimental consequence for both the mother and child. Evidence suggests that the children born to obese mothers are themselves at increased risk of poor cardiometabolic health and that this not only results from genetic transmission but also “epigenetic” transmission. This concept has been termed “Developmental Programming” or the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). It proposes that exposure to a suboptimal in utero environment, such as maternal obesity leads to structural, functional, and molecular changes that influence the susceptibility of the offspring to poor cardio-metabolic health throughout its life. Although underexplored, there is growing evidence that responses to a suboptimal in utero environment may differ between males and females. There are several interventional approaches during pregnancy that have been explored to minimize fetal inheritance of poor cardiometabolic health, such as an exercise intervention. However, these are complex as they need to consider effects on mother and child as well as age-associated changes that could display sexual dimorphism." @default.
