- W4378895329 abstract "Tropical fibre bundles of Rhecktophyllum camerunense (RC) and Ananas comosus (AC) extracted from the equatorial region of Cameroon were characterised and used as fibrous reinforcement of gypsum plaster composites. A better understanding of the structural and mechanical properties of these fibre bundles is crucial to use them as biosourced fibrous reinforcement of construction materials. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) micrographs revealed the presence of RC fibre bundles with or without open central channels. Two types of AC fibre bundles were also observed: fibrovascular and mesophylian fibre bundles. The inner porosity of RC and AC fibre bundles depended on the type of fibre bundle. Tensile tests revealed that the mechanical properties of individual fibre bundles were quite dispersed. This dispersion was quantified using Weibull distributions. The average values for the Young's modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break of AC (resp. RC) fibre bundles were 12.2 GPa, 487 MPa and 3.2% (resp. 5.2 GPa, 268 MPa and 21.6%), respectively. The dispersion was found to be correlated to the geometry of the cross-sections of the fibre bundle, the gauge length, and the plant type. Gypsum plaster composites were then prepared by casting/evaporation using a water/plaster mixing ratio of 0.8 and a fibre bundle volume content of 1%. The composites were characterised using bending and indentation tests. It was shown that the studied fibre bundles induced a noticeable increase of the flexural stiffness, the stress at break and toughness of gypsum composites, although lower than that given by a similar volume fraction of glass fibre bundles. Increasing the aspect ratio of plant-based fibre bundles would also lead to higher flexural mechanical performance of gypsum plaster composites." @default.
