Biofuels are increasingly gaining both scientific and public attention, driven by factors such as the need for increased energy security, concern over greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, oil price hikes, and support from government subsidies. Biofuel is considered carbon neutral, as the biomass absorbs roughly the same amount of carbon dioxide during growth, when burnt. Biofuels could be said to be energy fuels derived from the organic sources created by the plants and living things, which can be grown and harvested several times repeatedly. An alternative to nonrenewable energy fuels is sourced mainly from agricultural and vital harvesting, woodlands, and residue streams. Biofuels are typical forms of either biodiesel (produced from vegetable oils, reused wax, or creature fats) or bioethanol (alcohol produced by fermenting sugar and starch crops such as corn) or biogas. Biofuels are developed as a substitute for petroleum because of their nontoxic, sulfur-free, biodegradable nature, originating from the renewable sources. Depending upon the feedstock, biofuels are categorized into four types: first (oil-based plants, sugar, and starch), second (agricultural and woodland residues), third (algae), and fourth (engineered cyanobacterial) generation biofuels. Techniques for biofuel generation of solid, fluid, and gaseous fuels can be categorized as biofuels. Biomass feedstocks are used to manufacture certain biofuels, and they can substitute traditional fuel sources and cut carbon emissions. Biofuel like biodiesel is produced by transesterification of triglycerides which are the main ingredients of biological origin oils in the presence of an alcohol and must be purified before being used as a fuel. The methods adopted in the extraction and determination of various biofuels include: biogas (biomethane) extraction, dichromate oxidation method, direct injected gas chromatography, distillation-hydrometric method.
