Judi Upton-Ward here edits and gives a parallel English translation of an incomplete, linguistically mixed text of the Templar Rule (sections 55-59, containing ritual text, are in Latin), found in a Catalan manuscript. An important aspect of this is that it contains some clauses not found in the French version ofthe Rule (p. xiii). The editor seems unsure of the distinction between 'manuscript' and 'text' (p. xii), using the perspective indicated by certain geographical expressions to suggest that 'the manu? script appears to have been compiled in the East' when what is involved here, surely, is rather the specific text that it contains, or an ancestor thereof. Although the editor does not notice the potential importance of this point, details such as the anticipatory duplication 'no fo ensi', struck out in section 4 (p. 2), may possibly suggest that this manuscript was copied from a Catalan exemplar, rather than being a first-generation rendering into that linguistic form. The edition, based on a microfilm (p. xiii), does not indicate expansion of any contractions, but the criteria are otherwise explained clearly (pp. xix-xx) and are defensible given the nature of the text. The translator's policy ('some words have been left in the original when a transla? tion might be misleading or has proved impossible' (p. xx)) produces some curiosities. If chapeldefer can be glossed in a footnote as 'wide-brimmed helmet' (n. 79), and garnaxa as 'sleeveless cloak' (n. 78; cf.n. 107, 'sleeveless cope' forgarnacha de baria, with the 'vair' for some reason omitted), why cannot these English terms be used in the parallel translation? Sometimes such italicized forms in the latter do not reproduce the precise manuscript spelling (retrais, section 134, for MS retrayts(defined, n. 61); roncin,section 189, for MS roci); in other cases, however, even orthographic variation of the type baylyalbaylia/bailia is faithfullyreproduced in the untranslated words. The supporting scholarly material is varied. No detailed and systematic description of the manuscript is given. The editor presents us with two maps, neither of which has a scale. The introduction usefully compares the contents and organization of the Catalan text with its French counterpart and with the partial transcription of the Catalan by Delaville Le Roulx (1889), and also provides a helpful summary list ofthe clauses contained in the text. There are two differentsets of notes, with distinctive numbering conventions, the textual and editorial notes referringto the edited text, and those of historical commentary relating to the parallel translation. This arrange? ment is sensible. The index to the volume, however, leaves much to be desired. It is extremely poor where personal names are concerned: we have the paradoxical situation that around thirtyindividuals actually named in the Rule are not included in the index, while those merely mentioned in passing by the editor in footnotes (e.g. Amalric of Lusignan, n. 101; Baldwin I, n. 93; Louis IX, n. 28) are listed. Some toponyms also suffer.The index is also thematically somewhat selective. While under 'Wheat' there is a reference to 'selling without permission' (section 175), there is no entry forits converse, 'selling with permission' (see section 168), nor for 'spoilageof (section 113). Likewise, read? ers using the index to locate the matters covered by section 42 will look in vain for any entries concerning 'possession', 'demon(ic)', 'devil', 'diabolic',or 'evil spirit', and this important concept appears to have been overlooked by the indexer, if not by the Rule. Other concepts potentially important to historians and literaryscholars alike are not registered: these include 'books' (sections 138, 161), which should also be crossreferenced to the index entry for 'Rule', to the section of which devoted to the retrais we must add sections 134 and 156, the indexer having omitted what are probably the two most important references in the text to this part of the Rule.
