- W4379618098 abstract "GROUP, Vol. 35, No.i,March 2011 Book Review Contributions ofSelfPsychology to Group Psychotherapy:Selected Papers. By Walter N. Stone. London: Karnac, 2009, 253 pp. Reviewed by JackHerskovits1 Walter Stonesbook Contributions ofSelfPsychology toGroup Psychotherapy is a well-organized andthoughtfully constructed volume ontheapplication ofself psychology togroup psychotherapy. Thebookcomprises selected papers authored over thecourse ofStones career. Many were coauthored with colleagues, andalldealwith someaspectofapplying self psychological principles, concepts, andtechniques to thegroup psychotherapy setting. There arethree sections, titled Theory, Clinical Applications, andSevere Disorders. Thethird section, Severe Disorders, derives directly from Stone sclinical work with seriously disturbed populations andprovides themost personal senseofStone asa therapist. Totheextent that psychoanalytic theories resemble all-encompassing explanatory systems for understanding existential reality, Stonecanbeconsidered a trueself psychologist inthat heusesthetheory tounderstand theessenceofboth individual andgroupmodalities. Inthefirst twosections ofthebook,Stonefaces thechallenge ofbuilding a modelofgrouptherapy basedprimarily on theideas developedbyKohut. In doingso,Stonetakeson a formidable and difficult task becauseself psychology, initsfocuson elucidating thedynamics ofnarcissism, is very mucha theory ofanindividual selfrather thana group. Kohutsdescription ofthedevelopment oftheselfvianarcissistic needshasprovided clinicians with powerful antennae for dealing with avery broadrange ofclinical phenomena aswell asa setofuseful technical clinical methods intherealm ofindividual treatment. As ananalyst whoisidentified more with interpersonal theory, this reviewer neverthelesshasbeengreatly influenced bythecompelling description ofthenarcissistic dimension ofhumanexperience asitisportrayed inself psychological theory. But 1 Correspondence should beaddressed toJack Herskovits, PsyD, 80Eighth Avenue, No.1108, New York, NY10011. E-mail: Jherskovits@adelphi.edu. ISSN 0362-4021©2011 Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society 73 74 HERSKOVITS asa one-person psychology, self psychology's applicability togroup psychotherapy contains someinherent limitations. Fortunately, Stonessophistication as a theoretician andclinician prevents himfrom constructing a modelofgrouptherapy thatresembles thetraditional one-person modelgroupsinwhichthetherapist is essentially treating eachpatient individually ina groupsetting. Instead, inthetheory section ofthebook, Stone doesanexcellent jobofessentially transposing basicconcepts from self psychology tothegroup context. First he(and RoyWhitman) describe somefundamental departures onetakes from theclassical modelinadopting a self psychological perspective ongroup dynamics. Forexample, Stone moves from theoedipalmodel(theleader asfather, other members assiblings) toa modelofnarcissistic development (leaderandother members asselfobjects). In thinking that isvery consistent with Kohuts ideas, these twomodels areseenasdistinct (though sequential) developmental lines that arerelevant togroups atdifferent stages ofthegroups evolution andatdifferent levels ofthepatients individual development. Byintroducing theconceptofa discursive self object function to describethe therapeutic actionofgroupparticipation, Stonealso attempts toescapetheoneperson modeloftherapeutic action that isassociated with self psychology. However, itisnotclear howthis concept fits with self psychology's cornerstone developmental needsofmirroring, idealization, andtwinship. Thisisbutoneexample ofthehow theauthor sstrong faithfulness tohismodelseemstomotivate hisideasand, inthis reviewer sopinion, mayprevent morefar-reaching innovation inhisthinking. The concept ofthediscursive selfobject function isintriguing. Theideathat a certain kind ofgroupdiscussion facilitates healthy narcissistic development isappealing, butit requires further development toreachthelevelofsignificance itimplies aboutthe clinical utility ofgroup therapy. Aspresented byStone, itisa very general ideathat merits moreelaboration. Forexample, itisnotclearhowthediscursive selfobject function evolves developmentally intheinterpersonal world oftheindividual, nor istheroleitplaysoutside thegrouptherapy context. In theClinicalApplications partofthebook, twosections areofparticular value.Thefirst dealswiththeemotion ofenvyingroups, thesecondwithanger. Envy isa particularly interesting phenomenon ingroups, andtheself psychological perspective onitsrelation toshameisnoteworthy andprovides thoughtful reflections .Theclinical applications section, though wellwritten andrichwithclinical material, againconfirms theauthor s faithfulness tohistheoretical model.Anger and aggression arealwaysviewedas defensive responsesto narcissistic injury (rather thanas emotions ordrives thathavea lifeorindependent sourceoftheir own).Thepatient onlyexperiences thetherapist as a selfobject, andallsignificant clinical events arerelated tothenarcissistic dimension ofexperience. Theclinical material isvivid, andStonesworkisthatofa master clinician. His attunement to multiple aspects ofgroupevents transcends thetheoretical lensheimposesonhis work. Throughout reading hisbook, thisreviewer felt a great senseofrespect for Stonesseriousness anddiscipline as a clinician andtheoretician. BookReview: Contributions ofSelf Psychology toGroup Psychotherapy 75 I wouldstrongly recommend thisbooktoanymental healthprofessional interested in grouptherapy; however, thebookdoes presuppose someknowledge ofselfpsychology. Thosewhosetraining andexperience havebeenintheoretical modelsother thanselfpsychology willfind thisvolumetobe a valuableassetin itsapplication togroupprocess.Itraisesvaluabletheoretical considerations and offers practical methodological ideas.Readingthisbookcanenrich clinical work andstimulate interesting theoretical reflection. ..." @default.
