Thomas1 Therewasa treethatstoodatthecrossroads ofthetowninNewJersey inwhich I usedtolive.Itindicated theturnI shouldmaketotaketheroadhome.Having stoodforhundreds ofyears, itwasa landmark notjustformebutforourwhole community. Itsbroadcanopyandglorious fallcolorsagainst a steepled skywere treasurable. Thelongprevailing malestereotype isthat a manmust serve asa similar symbol, a sturdy oak.Buta truly strong tree isnotjustonethat stands straight andunyielding ;itisonethat canalsobendwithout breaking intheweather. SuchwasHarold. HaroldBernard wasa landmark likemytree, for ourownwhole community ofthe American GroupPsychotherapy Association (AGPA)andofgroup psychotherapy worldwide. Originally broadly trained ingroupandsystems theories, Haroldgrew to embracerelational interpersonal theory and knowledgeably incorporated its constructs intohisworkandwriting. Haroldhada robust approach tolifeandtopeople.Asmanyrecallwithdeep fondness, hewasa true foodie whowouldresearch restaurants andcuisines with as muchdedication ashedidhiswriting ongroup psychotherapy theory andpractice. Itwassplendid tosharea mealwithhimandwithhisbelovedBonnie, whichwas always a raucous, enlivening event. Thatwasanother marker ofHarold - hewas immensely alive. Haroldhada longdevotion togroup psychotherapy: Serving asa pastpresident ofAGPA, asa former president oftheEastern Group Psychotherapy Society (EGPS), 1 Private practice, New York and Morristown, NJ, and Chair, Specialization inTrauma and Disaster Studies, Postdoctoral Program inPsychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, New York University. He wrote oreditedmorethan40 booksandchapters. His lastbook, edited with hislongtime collaborators Robert H. KleinandVictor L.Schermer, was emblematic ofhiscommitment. Itis OnBecoming a Psychotherapist: ThePersonal andProfessional Journey (2011)thatfills thegapin attention tothedevelopment ofpsychotherapists through theknowledge and experience basesrequired ofus practitioners. Evengreater, however, washisenormous generosity andgenerativity. Heeagerly mentored a hostofyoung andemerging group psychotherapists andoften donated financial support tobothEGPSs andAGPAsworkshops andscholarships. In December2001 ,as he approached thebeginning ofhistermas president ofAGPA, HaroldcalledtoaskmetojoinBobKleinas cochairofAGPAsDisaster Outreach TaskForce, ourassociations response tothe9/11 terrorist attacks. In doingso,he uttered whatto mymindranksin thepantheonofgreat lines, accompanying trust me,I workforthegovernment andthecheckis inthemail. He said,It wonttakemuchtime. Whether thiswasprediction orinducement, hewasincorrect abouthowmuch timeitwouldtake.Nevertheless, hisoffering metheopportunity toworksideby sidewithhimandwithBob Klein, twomenI grewtorespect, admire, andhold deepfondness for, wasalsoa waytocontribute toworkthatwouldbe amongmy mostproudinvolvements inAGPAandpsychology morebroadly. He alsoextended aninvitation towork with himinApril 2011, whenheinvited metojoin himin providing training to ourChinesecolleaguesattheShanghai MentalHealthCenter. Sadly, illness prevented himfrom beingabletotravel ordo thework involved. Hisabsence wasa profound presence for meandfor theseminar participants. Several, whenthey learned ofhisdeath, askedmetoconvey their sympathies tohisfamily.
