- W4379792009 abstract "An Eco‐Theology Andy Bell My experiences in nature during childhood were in essence the underpinnings of my earliest spiritual experiences. And as my faith and knowledge of God has expanded, theology and science have pushed me to think of God in different and deeper ways. The basis of my theological understanding of Creation is grounded in the belief that nothing within the is‐ness, seen or unseen belongs to human beings. Individually we are here as incarnational beings for merely a brief second in Creation time. As a species it has been said that we only appeared on the clock of Creation a minute before midnight and our ability to record history and religion only in the last few seconds. Therefore as we approach the converging crises that our species have created that may well determine if and which species survive, we are a very young and adolescent group. Consequently our ethics as well as theology have and continue to lag far behind our technology. The youthful consciousness perpetuates that belief that we “own” parts or all of the created order and have the right to consume and destroy it. As a Christian, I first use the often quoted New Testament scripture of beginning with John 3.16 to guide my eco‐theology. When one reads, “For God so loved the world” it seems the typical perception is that world really means people. From the biblical Greek the original word we translate into world is Cosmos. God sent the Christ not that people or individuals would be condemned, but that the entire Cosmos, everything seen and unseen, would be redeemed and brought into right relationship with God‐self and the entire created order. It seems logical and feels empowering to love that which God loves: the Cosmos. Wendell Berry reminds us that long before religions were formed and humans wrote scripture, God was revealing God's self through trees and animals and all living things. Hinduism teaches of the interconnectedness of all Creation and the Divinity within all things. Bhagavad‐gita 7.19: “Thus after innumerable births, one perfected in wisdom, understanding fully the supreme Lord as the ultimate cause of all cause, surrenders unto me; such a great soul is very rare,” Very similar teachings are found in Buddhism regarding the all‐encompassing is‐ness and being. All of the major world religions have taught that we do not own the earth, but are a part of it. Justice is another aspect of Creation Care scripture is very direct about. Remember in Matthew (23.36) when the lawyer is attempting to test Jesus and asks about the greatest commandment in the law. Jesus answers it is the first commandment to Love the Lord your God and then adds to love your neighbor as yourself. As people of faith we must consider the long‐reaching effect of our every action as how it impacts our neighbors to the four corners of the world. When I flip on a light switch that causes coal or oil to be burned I am responsible for how the toxins from those smoke stacks harm my neighbors. In Matthew 25 Jesus tells us, “As you have done it to the least of these, you have done it unto me.” When the lifestyles of we wealthy, privileged westerners affect the growing seasons and rain patterns in drought‐stricken Africa, causing increased starvation and malaria‐carrying mosquitoes to spread into higher elevations where they have never existed before, we are doing these things to Jesus. God has been warning us for a long, long time about how our behavior impacts others: Ezek 34.17‐19: “Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, but you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture? When you drink of clear water, must you foul the rest with your feet? And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have fouled with your feet?” Apocalyptic Narcissism, a term I was recently introduced to, also explains much of the exacerbated damage perpetrated on Creation. Apocalyptic Narcissism relates to insatiable overconsumption from greed. Obviously a significant issue..." @default.
