- W4379877753 abstract "There has been a reinvigorated interest in the characterization of hypersonic flows developing around various vehicle systems recently. Due to its complex multidisciplinary aspects, the limitations associated with mimicking these flows in a laboratory environment, and the high cost and various uncertainties of flight-testing, numerical simulations have assumed an important role as a design and analysis tool. Direct numerical simulations or wall-resolved large eddy simulations of flows at high Reynolds numbers can become prohibitive in terms of the computational cost. Reduced-order models based on modal decomposition, such proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) or dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) have been widely considered in the past several decades to model these flows at a reduced computational cost. In this paper, a data-driven approach based on DMD for the construction of a reduced-order model for hypersonic boundary layer flows is derived and tested. The application that we target is a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer with Mach number ranging from 6 to 10. Results in terms of iso-surfaces of Q-criterion, contours of instantaneous temperature, as well as mean flow, Reynolds stress, and turbulent heat flux profiles show that the reduced order model is able to accurately capture and match the dynamics and the statistics of the LES results." @default.
