- W4379879385 abstract "An investigation of different transient turbulence models and numerical setups for computational fluid dynamic simulations on sub-scale race car wing and wheel configurations was conducted. Different approaches for resolving and modeling turbulent structures are nvestigated and compared with experimental data. The benefits and weaknesses of the respective models are presented and the numerical setups for these models are described. The focus lies on the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach and a hybrid RANS/LES approach, known as Detached Eddy Simulation. The hybrid approach was incorporated as conventional DES and with the wall-modeled LES functionality of the improved delayed detached eddy (IDDES) model. High-fidelity large eddy simulations in the range of quasi-direct numerical simulations were performed. A comparison between high-fidelity transient solutions and solutions obtained from simulations using the RANS closure was carried out and the results are presented. The work highlights some weaknesses of the LES approach in strong adverse pressure gradients and demonstrates the ability to predict laminar to turbulent transition on the suction surface of a simple wing in close proximity to the ground." @default.
