- W4380030147 abstract "The paper investigates a new approach for industrial control systems (ICSs) protection from cyber threats by leveraging the advanced capabilities of next-generation programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Although verified (traditional) PLC hardware components and programming environments still dominate when it comes to the novelty, the new PLCs on the market nowadays come with interesting additional tools and functionalities. One such addition to the PLCs is the open-source Linux shell. Although in most cases it cannot be used for the industrial process programming, it can be used, for example, for its protection. The paper therefore investigates effectiveness of a Linux-based ICS security solution against over-the-internet cyber threats, implemented on the commercially available, industry approved PLC. As such, it can be implemented inside any new or existing industrial facility, it can be configured/extended to meet any process-specific requirements and is, as will be explained, easily distributed for protection of as many ICS devices as needed. The experimental verification of the investigated approach is carried out on a real industrial (Modbus-based) control system." @default.
