The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of returning to the community and needs of people with spinal cord injuries. In-depth interviews were performed with 17 people with spinal cord injuries within three years of discharge from the hospital, and were thematically analyzed. As a result of data analysis, the lack of information and guidance on formal services, lack of education and training to enhance newly changed body use, fear of living with disabilities and negative external views, and difficulties in maintaining existing social relationships were identified as barriers, whereas the support of families and friends, support groups and training for daily activity skills with experienced peers were identified as facilitators. The findings of this study also reveal that people with spinal cord injuries require opportunities for out-of-hospital activities, training for wheelchair use skills, and information and education needed for community living before the discharge, and developing a service user-centered system, community groups for people with disabilities and a peer support-based community reintegration support program after the discharge. The results of this study highlight the need for enhancing the provision of information and linkage of services, social experience training during a in-hospital period, a peer support-based community reintegration support program, and support for improving housing and community environment." @default.
