- W4380303933 abstract "Oligodendrocytes (OLs) are the cells responsible for the myelin in the central nervous system (CNS). Axon myelination is crucial for the proper efficient and rapid transmission of electrical signals among brain regions. In addition, myelin provides energy support for the neurons. The dysfunction or decrease in the number of OLs and oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) is part of the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. Thus, increasing interest in therapy for myelin-related pathologies has been observed last decades. Among the potential treatment, endocannabinoid signaling is a key target for myelin and OL impairments. This chapter reviews and describes the main findings regarding the positive effects of cannabinoids (Phytocannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids, or endocannabinoids) on myelin formation. Moreover, this chapter shows the proteomic analysis of a previous study, supporting that cannabinoids play a key role in oligodendrocyte biology. Further investigations and analysis of the proteome data are encouraged to find new pharmacological targets." @default.
