- W4380606475 abstract "Abstract Purpose To evaluate academic performance in exercise physiology coursework among students who have previously attended or have not previously attended human physiology coursework. Methods This is a two aims research study. The first aim examined the school records of 311 undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor's degree in physical education. Participants were divided into two groups: students who had previously attended and were approved in human physiology coursework (group 1, n = 212, 68.2%) and students who have not previously attended or have attended but failed in human physiology coursework (group 2, n = 99, 31.8%). A Poisson regression model with a robust variance estimator was used to estimate the prevalence ratio (PR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The second aim involved 67 bachelor's degrees in physical education students who completed an electronic questionnaire about their perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology coursework. Results The students who have not previously attended or have attended but failed in human physiology coursework human physiology coursework have a higher PR 2.37 (CI95% 1.68–3.34) to be not approved in exercise physiology, when compared to those who attended human physiology and was approved. Regarding the students' perceptions of human physiology and exercise physiology courseworks, most students reported that these courseworks are difficult (58.2% and 64.2%, respectively), but the students recognized the importance of these courseworks for professional practice (59.7% and 85.1%, respectively). Conclusion Students who have not participated in extracurricular academic activities are more likely to perform worse academically; thus, human physiology should be considered a prerequisite discipline in a bachelor's degree in physical education course." @default.
