- W4380905103 abstract "Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient, potent antioxidant, and necessary co-factor in numerous important biosynthetic reactions. Adequate dietary intake is essential to maintain these functions, particularly in states of illness. When administered intravenously in supranormal doses, vitamin C shows promise as a treatment modality in states of critical illness due to presumed beneficial effects on the endothelium and microcirculation. Inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial damage are also the primary drivers of secondary brain injury, the additive brain damage seen after an initial traumatic or nontraumatic insult. With its ability to counteract these mechanisms in animal models and clinical trials, vitamin C holds promise as neuroprotective agent. High-dose administration may stabilize the blood–brain barrier and mitigate brain edema, while lower doses may replete the severely diminished vitamin C stores seen in states of acute illness and central nervous system damage, thus strengthening the brain's ability to tolerate oxidative stress." @default.
