Gastrointestinal (GI) bioreactors are widely used as models for in vitro mimicking the digestive tract. Although these in vitro models may offer closer intestinal physiology, there is an underestimation of the role of the stomach in initial digestion. These models have been accepted for in vitro digestibility assessment but have not yet been internationally harmonized. These models were used to study the interactions of digested nanomaterials with the gastrointestinal microenvironment (gastrointestinal fluids, cells, microorganisms, etc.). This chapter overviews the in vitro models that simulate GI physiology, specifically focusing on stomach activity and their importance for evaluating the digestibility of oral nanoformulations." @default.
