- W4381144740 abstract "
Objectives
Health professionals work towards treating illness and preventing disease. Most know that globally we face a health crisis associated with the climate emergency and air pollution, which disproportionately affects those already disadvantaged, particularly children. But despite understanding the science, there are barriers to bringing this knowledge into everyday practice. We describe one initiative to facilitate collaboration and action.
Methods
Ride For Their Lives[1] (RFTL) started in 2021 delivering The Healthy Climate Prescription[2], a letter signed by organisations representing 45 million health workers calling for stronger climate action on by COP26 negotiators. It was cycled from the World Health Organisation (WHO) Geneva to London; then by children’s health workers and patients (now protected in a blue satchel, on which children had written messages to politicians) 800km to Glasgow. In 2022, shorter rides brought together leading healthcare, climate advocacy and cycling organisations. This theme continued with London-Geneva-Naples rides linking a broader array of groups (including WHO, International Hospital Federation, Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), French and Italian paediatricians, and reclaiming-streets groups), and pledging support for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty[3]. We handed the blue satchel containing this and various crucial documents[4,5] to WHO to deliver to COP27 negotiators in Egypt[6].
Results
Riding bikes together in this way, whilst having fun and getting fitter, has captured interest worldwide and facilitated conversations and exchange of ideas in over 30 rides in 8 countries, resulting in development of local projects. In the UK, there has been creation of a paediatric sustainability-fellow post, improved education around air-quality, meetings with Parliamentarians and Councillors and election of one RFTL rider to their local council. 2023 started with a ride supporting a new clean-air-zone, with more planned – giving the opportunity for health voices to support local policymakers.
Conclusion
In 20 months, working agilely and flexibly with other established organisations, RFTL have empowered and supported health professionals to climate action. ‘Ride For Their Lives challenges healthcare voices to: Improve sustainability in their work place. Health care is a major contributor to climate change and should improve and lead by example. Educate and update health curricula and provide training and support to health workers to discuss the climate emergency with their colleagues and patients. Advocate by enabling health professionals to effectively communicate and advocate on climate change and health to decision and policy makers. We know climate action includes reducing dependence on fossil fuels; bicycles are part of the solution[1].’
References
www.RideForTheirLives.net www.healthyclimateletter.net https://fossilfueltreaty.org WHO: The Health Argument for Climate action 2021.
