- W4381163546 abstract "Data visualisations are common in scientific research, yet they are frequently misinterpreted due to our cognitive biases. Despite students being a key audience of scientific journals, there is a lack of research investigating how the type of visualisation impacts student interpretation accuracy. This study examined how students interpret commonly used data visualisations in scientific communication. 51 participants voluntarily completed an online experiment via the platform Qualtrics, where they were presented with three plot types: bar graphs with confidence interval error bars, bar graphs with standard deviation error bars and raincloud plots. The graphs displayed two groups with either a small or medium effect size, to represent no statistical significance, or statistical significance, respectively. Participants decided whether there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups for each graph and rated their confidence on a Likert scale of 1-5. After the exclusion criteria, 27 participants were included in the final sample. Two 3 x 2 factorial ANOVAs were conducted to analyse the results where the measures were the means of the correct responses and the means of the confidence ratings. Findings showed a significant large interaction between graph and effect size for both students’ accuracy and confidence rating. Students were both the most accurate and the most confident with bar graphs with confidence interval error bars for the medium effect size data. These findings demonstrate that bar graphs with confidence interval error bars can be an effective plot type for this task. This study also provides an evidence base for raincloud plots." @default.
