- W4381332020 abstract "
Introduction
Due to their sensitive nature, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are often difficult to recruit to. Recruitment and retention is integral to study success in order to enable efficient rollout of alternative treatments for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with high rates of antimicrobial resistance such as gonorrhoea. We aimed to identify barriers to recruitment to RCTs for treatment of urogenital gonorrhoea; to establish potential study design changes that would enable optimal recruitment rates.
Methods
A retrospective, qualitative recruitment data review was performed. Patients accessing SRH services with confirmed gonorrhoea were pre-screened on their eligibility based on pre-set inclusion/exclusion criteria. Pre-screening logs identified reasons for eligible patients not being approached or declining screening.
Results
From January to December 2022, 877 patients were pre-screened by research nurses. 304/877 (34.7%) individuals were eligible, 49/304 (16.1%) were approached and 10/49 (20.4%) were screened (all recruited). 255/304 (83.9%) of the eligible subjects were not approached due to study design/logistical barriers, namely the need for external sample-processing (Table 1). Approached patients mainly declined participation due to demanding time commitments (Table 2).
Discussion
Many patients with gonorrhoea presenting to our SRH clinic were not eligible due to strict inclusion/exclusion criteria. Timely processing and/or shipment of samples and length and/or frequency of visits are key barriers for participation. Using flexible and adaptive designs, adjusting visit length and frequency to match patient expectations in SRH clinics and introducing in-house sample processing would significantly broaden opportunities for more representative subjects to participate in STI studies." @default.
