- W4381469004 abstract "This chapter will look at the military and police structure from which ancient Egyptian bodyguards were recruited, with a focus on evidence of their presence as protectors of the king during the Middle and New Kingdoms. It will discuss the question of identification that arises due to the lack of a specific word denoting “bodyguard.” Their role and duties as “bodyguard” will be discussed and evidenced with regard to the context of the texts in which the word Smsw appears, both in conjunction with the words “of the king” and without this connotation. This contextual focus will show the translation “bodyguard” as being appropriate rather than “follower”, “retainer”, “attendant” or “servant”. The noted appearance of the word will come from the primary sources of the textual inscriptions and visual representations on tomb and temple walls and personal stelae. In addition the mention of bodyguards in narrative and didactic literature will be addressed. Visual images will be interpreted to evidence bodyguard presence. Secondary sources providing reference and opinion will also be referenced. The chapter will provide insight into the existence of ancient Egyptian bodyguards, the means of their identification and the evidence regarding their duties as protectors of the king." @default.
