- W4381618148 abstract "Purpose: To review literature on the effectiveness of physiotherapy(PT) interventions in the prevention and treatment of osteopenia among preterm neonates. Bone mineralization peaks during the last trimester; therefore most of premature babies are detected with osteopenia. The prevalence of osteopenia among very low birth weight (LBW) infants is 16-40% and 50 % extremely LBW infants. Evidence suggests that PT interventions play a major role in preventing osteopenia, however; intervention effectiveness is inconclusive. The present review will explore the effectiveness of various physiotherapy interventions used in preventing and treating osteopenia among premature neonates. Participants: Articles reporting subjects as neonates born with gestational age ≤ 32 weeks. Methods: A Comprehensive search was conducted in the following databases Google scholar and Pub Med. Search strategy was devised and articles were screened based on the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Analysis: 20 articles were screened in which 9 articles were included. 7 randomized control trials, 1 systemic review, and 1 case-control study. Result: Majority of studies (5/9) used passive mobilizations with joint pressure to prevent osteopenia, intensity and frequency of the treatment varied in all the studies. Remaining 4 studies used tactile and kinesthetic stimulation as a mode of intervention. None of the studies mentioned intervention protocol. Conclusion: A structured exercise protocol would improve bone mineralization among preterm infants. However, there is a lack of well designed studies focusing only on PT interventions. Future studies must focus on the standardization of exercise protocol. Implication: Untouched area of practice as a PT’s, this review suggests PT intervention is very crucial for premature neonates as it can prevent and reduce osteopenia." @default.
