- W4381888331 abstract "Extract This study involved research in more than a dozen different archives around France, reflecting a wide variety of organizations representing numerous segments of the French population. Each and every time I arrived at an archive and spoke with the staff, I was informed that I was unlikely to find any anticommunism there. Knowledgeable archivists assured me their organizations were uninvolved in such matters; they were either apolitical or otherwise respectful towards communists because of their important role in liberating France from Nazism. This point of view is not restricted to archivists. Reviewing the historiography of anticommunism in France, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that it has been seriously understudied. A handful of works have addressed political or state anticommunism, for example in the military or the intelligence community. A few have discussed intellectuals, journalists, or the small number of ‘professional anticommunists’ who made it their life’s work. The wider social history of anticommunism, its prevalence within the general population, and its impact on social life, have, however, remained unexamined. In part, this reflects a certain national self-conception, which regards anticommunist hysteria as something foreign to the French national character and, essentially, as an American problem." @default.
