- W4381889287 abstract "Abstract This is the second of three chapters that look at the religious and spiritual qualities of the seven dream journalists. Here the quality of religious mysticism is considered as a defining characteristic of the dream journalists. In contrast to mundane religiosity, which emphasizes here-and-now reality, each of the dream journalists displayed a strong interest in otherworldly realms, altered states of consciousness, and metaphysical adventures. In this way, they can be considered in light of the classic definition of mysticism in William James’s The Varieties of Religious Experience. The mystical qualities of the dream journalists can also be understood in terms of Harvey Whitehouse’s more contemporary “modes of religiosity” theory, as exemplars of the “imagistic mode” of being religious." @default.
