- W4381891734 abstract "Extract Analytical philosophy is notorious for many traits, one of which is the tendency to define every term that could possibly be of philosophical interest. With this in mind, it is odd that, until relatively recently, luck was not itself a topic of direct philosophical analysis. This is especially puzzling given that it has always been crystal clear, going right back to antiquity, that luck is a deeply important philosophical concept. Think, for example, of how luck figures in metaphysical debates about causation and free will, in political debates about just deserts, in epistemological debates about the nature of knowledge (e.g., Gettier-style cases), and in ethical debates about moral luck. And yet nonetheless analytical philosophers, so often caricatured as being unable to resist a conceptual analysis even when it is unnecessary, tended to treat luck as an undefined primitive, or at least only offered partial accounts of it. I don’t know why philosophy took this detour around the analysis of luck (this is probably more of a topic for sociologists), but whatever the reason, we do now finally have a thriving debate about the nature of luck and how it impacts philosophical questions. This has, in turn, re-energized those philosophical discussions, such as those concerned with moral and epistemic luck, where the notion of luck is prominent. The contemporary concern with the nature of luck and its import to specific philosophical questions has also spawned new topics of interest." @default.
