- W4381892511 abstract "A connection between autism and eating disorders (EDs) has been suggested for decades in research. Various cognitive similarities between individuals with either autism or AN have been identified, but little work has examined social experiences. We used large-scale self-report data to examine similarities and differences in the best- and wider-friendships of autistic and non-autistic women with and without EDs. We found significant differences in the wider peer relationships of autistic and non-autistic women, but not those of women with and without ED. There was anecdotal evidence suggesting that autistic women may experience best friendships differently, but this finding was associated with a great deal of uncertainty. Our findings suggest that being both autistic and having an ED may not compound or additionally exacerbate friendship. Future work should further examine the role and quality of close friendships among both autistic and non-autistic people with EDs and how these may change during recovery from EDs." @default.
