- W4381954827 abstract "IL-1 is an inflammatory cytokine that belongs to the IL-1 family of cytokines and plays a major role in innate and adaptive immunity. It is involved in several bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections and plays a major role as proinflammatory cytokine in driving a cascade of events that ultimately leads to inflammation. IL-1α and IL-1β are the most studied cytokines of this family. IL-1α and IL-1β are synthesized as procytokines and are processed to induce immune infiltration at the site of infection and are often regarded as the master regulators of inflammation. IL-1α is often viewed as a pyrogenic cytokine and lymphocyte-activating factor, while IL-1β modulates autoinflammation and is a product of inflammasome activation. MyD88-dependent signaling pathway, p38 MAPK, and NFκB are involved in the release of IL-1α and IL-1β, which further activate release of cytokines and chemokines to produce a greater inflammatory response. IL-1 is extensively studied in bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Helicobacter pylori, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, etc., and has shown to play an important role in bacterial clearance by recruiting immune cells at the site of infection. It has also been reported from different populations that individuals carrying a certain specific genotype of IL-1 are more susceptible to bacterial infections and increased mortality, again suggesting their importance in bacterial infections. IL-1 immunotherapy can be explored as a potential treatment for these bacterial infections. This chapter focuses on the role of IL-1α and IL-1β in bacterial infections." @default.
