- W4381955232 abstract "Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is clinically defined by a pattern of recurrent, stereotypic, and often incapacitating episodes of intense nausea and vomiting that are separated by periods of time free of symptoms. CVS was once regarded as a primarily pediatric illness, but it is now known that the disorder has a similar prevalence in adults. In many patients, CVS attacks can be “triggered” by exposure to certain physiological and psychological contexts, and the majority of CVS patients experience a stereotypic prodrome of symptoms that herald the development of a CVS episode. Different subtypes of CVS can be discerned based on differences in specific triggering contexts, clinical features of episodes, and patterns of associated comorbidities. CVS has been framed as a disorder of brain-gut interaction (DGBI), but the precise mechanisms underlying the pathophysiological basis for the disorder remain unclear. Nonetheless, several lines of evidence suggest that CVS likely has a neurological basis with potential links to neuronal excitability and the function of neural circuits important for nausea and vomiting." @default.
