- W4381955443 abstract "Several associations of human herpesvirus infections and helminth infestations with the development of multiple sclerosis (MS) have been reported. In particular, at present, infection by the human herpesvirus—the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)—is considered to be a causative factor in MS. Infection by another human herpesvirus—cytomegalovirus—has been shown to have a protective effect against the development of MS. Other human herpesvirus infections (e.g., varicella-zoster virus and human herpesvirus 6A) may also contribute to the development of MS. Conversely, there is evidence of a lower MS prevalence in populations where helminth infestations are widespread. The “hygiene hypothesis,” which attributes the increasing rates of autoimmune diseases to a reduced burden of infections in childhood, has been used to explain the higher prevalence of MS occurring in countries with highly developed infrastructures. Both human herpesviruses and intestinal helminths are highly adapted for survival with their human hosts, although the immunological mechanisms involved are quite different. An increasing understanding of how EBV infection contributes to MS has led to an interest in the development of anti-EBV prophylactics and therapeutics. Similarly, the potential efficacy of intestinal helminth prophylactic vaccines in preventing MS is being explored. In this chapter, the nature of these associations will be detailed." @default.
