- W4382072707 abstract "A sustainable approach toward remediation of petroleum sludge is a global challenge. During the processing of petroleum hydrocarbons, oil spills in both sea and freshwater occur, and a considerable amount of petroleum hydrocarbon is discharged into the soil. This has serious health and environmental consequences affecting humans as well as animals. Petroleum is comprised of hydrocarbons that are aliphatic, cyclic, and aromatic, as well as organic and organometallic in nature. Various physicochemical and biological methods including phytoremediation are being used to work out this global issue. The use of algae, fungi, and novel microbial strains provides a tenable solution for the degradation of petroleum sludge. Adding limiting factors like oxygen and chemical additives as integrated enhanced bioremediation have been shown to improve bioremediation efficiency. The use of algal–bacterial consortium is also being employed as an alternative to the physiochemical treatment approach and has proved to be more economic, efficient, and versatile. In this chapter bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons by algae, fungus, and microbes by integrated or enhanced technologies has been discussed." @default.
