- W4382896669 abstract "Plastic has been extensively produced and used in life due to its practicality. Plastic waste due to mismanagement is found in the environment and has become a global threat. Single-use plastic straws of various colors were observed stranded at the beach of Panjang Island, Banten Bay, Indonesia, showing signs of weathering. Plastic weathering due to photooxidation caused by UV irradiation, photothermal oxidation due to heat, and mechanical abrasion due to mechanic stress are the main process that will cause plastic to become brittle and break easily because it loses its elasticity, likely to produce microplastics. Wind is the most influential mechanism for horizontal transport of microplastic from the beach to the water surface. Weather events such as storms or high tides are likely to exchange plastic between the existing compartments. In area where monsoon occurs, such as at the tropical equator, high precipitation can cause a large flow of plastics from land to different marine environments. This work served as a preliminary result of a study to understand the process of plastic fragmentation into microplastic on a tropical beach environment." @default.
