- W4382997329 abstract "Commercial ships are the driving force of world trade and main engines are the primary components of them. For this reason, marine diesel engines play a key role in the sustainability of the worldwide supply chain. On the other hand, these engines are typically designed in massive dimensions; accordingly, they require high-pressure air for their combustion process. Therefore, this type of engine is equipped with an auxiliary called a turbocharger (T/C). T/C compresses the air, transfers it to the scavenge manifold for effective cylinder combustion, achieving the engine's optimal condition. This critical equipment, however, is one of the most commonly contaminated components on ships. Additionally, the fouled T/C is generally ignored by the ship crew and continues to be operated for a long time. However, this simple fouling problem can cause serious engine efficiency problems. To investigate this situation, the effects of T/C fouling on fuel consumption were tested in this study. The application was carried out on a International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved, full mission engine room simulator, and a two-stroke MAN B & W 6S50 MC-C marine diesel engine was used in this application. After the initial conditions, T/C exhaust side fouling malfunction was gradually added to the session, and simulation outputs were recorded. According to the results, cylinder combustion was adversely affected and fuel consumption of the main engine was increased due to the T/C exhaust side fouling." @default.
